Getting to QBL and Hobart and William Smith Colleges
The New York State Thruway (Interstate Route 90) is 7.5 miles to the north. Route 17 (the Southern Tier Expressway and the future I-86) is 99 miles to the southeast. Route I-81 is 50 miles to the east.
From the New York State Thruway (traveling east and west)
Take exit 42 for Geneva/Lyons; turn right onto Route 14 south and follow it to Geneva (6 miles). At the first traffic light (corner of Exchange and North streets), turn right onto North Street. At second traffic light (corner of North and N. Main streets), turn left onto N. Main St. Proceed south on N. Main St. 1.5 miles to Routes 5 and 20 (Hamilton St.) and follow signs for 5 and 20 West. The colleges will be one block away on the left.
From Interstate 81 and traveling north
Take I-81 to Whitney Point exit (#8); turn right onto State Route 26 N for a half mile; turn left onto State Route 11 for 2.3 miles; Continue straight to get onto State Route 79 W for 28.3 miles. As you approach Ithaca, take a slight onto Seneca Way for nearly a mile, then right onto Meadow Street, left onto W Buffalo St., then continue straight to get onto Cliff St/Route 96 for 23.8 miles. In Ovid, continue straight to Route 69A for 19 miles; turn left onto Routes 5 and 20 West. In 4 miles, the colleges are on your left.
From Interstate 81 and traveling south
Take I-81 south to exit 36 for the New York State Thruway (Route 90) to Exit 42 for Geneva/Lyons. Turn right onto Route 14 south and follow it to Geneva (6 miles). At the first traffic light (corner of Exchange and North streets), turn right onto North Street. At second traffic light (corner of North and N. Main streets), turn left onto N. Main St. Proceed south on N. Main St. 1.5 miles to Routes 5 and 20 (Hamilton St.) and follow signs for 5 and 20 West. The colleges will be one block away on the left.
Traveling by Air
There are airports in Ithaca (Ithaca-Tompkins International), Syracuse (Hancock International), and Rochester (Rochester International). Flights on Delta and United arrive in Ithaca from NYC and Newark daily. The Rochester and Syracuse are both approximately an hour from the HWS Campus and both have direct flights and connections everywhere in the United States and abroad. Rochester is slightly more accessible in terms of cost and in terms of obtaining Lyft and Uber rides from the airport to the HWS campus. Travel insurance is advised.
On-Campus Parking
The HWS campus has designated areas for visitor parking. Please refer to the HWS campus map. It is forbidden to leave vehicles in loading areas or to park in non-designated areas while not loading or unloading. Vehicles left in non-designated areas will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense. Under no circumstances is parking allowed in handicapped parking spaces without a handicapped permit.
As is typical of most college campuses, the buildings, roadways, sidewalks and parking areas at Hobart and William Smith Colleges are designed to accommodate pedestrian rather than vehicular traffic to and from classes, meals and events. Even if you drive from the dorm parking lot to the lot closest to your classroom, meals, and events, there will be a fair amount of walking.
QBL participants with mobility issues will have access to a van to get from place to place. If you need special accommodations, please inform us when you register.
