Celebration of Sa:gwáyoˀ Gayogo̱hó:nǫˀ/Cayuga People, We Returned

The West End Arts Campus is hosting a day-long FREE festival celebrating its new exhibition “Sa:gwáyoˀ Gayogo̱hó:nǫˀ/Cayuga People, We Returned” 10:30 am to 4:45 pm this Saturday, June 6. All of Saturday’s activities are planned for the grounds around the Schweinfurth Art Center and Cayuga Museum of History & Art, 203-205 Genesee St., Auburn. The celebration, which is free and open to the public, will move inside in case of rain.
Here is the schedule of events:
- 10:30 a.m.: Ganǫ́hǫnyǫhk (also known as the Thanksgiving Address) by Soyǫ́:wi:s Sam George (Gayogo̱hó:nǫˀ/Cayuga, Bear Clan), Carriage House Theater
- 10:30 a.m. – 4:45 p.m.: Art vendors will be set up throughout the West End Arts Campus
- 11 a.m. – noon: Our Sacred Responsibility to Place, a welcoming talk by Dan Longboat Roronhiakewen (Ganyę́gehó:nǫˀ/ Mohawk), Carriage House Theater
- 12:30 until gone: Sample traditional Hodinǫhsǫ́:nih Corn Bread compliments of Rick Lazore (Ganyę́gehó:nǫˀ/ Mohawk) and Traditional Hodinǫhsǫ́:nih Corn Soup, Hot Scones & Strawberry Drink compliments of Hazel Powless (Onę́yotga:ˀ/Oneida) and Will Powless (Onę́yotga:ˀ/Oneida)
- 12:30 – 1:15 p.m.: Solo performance by Gayogo̱hó:nǫˀ/Cayuga flute player Dan Hill, in the performance area
- 12:30 – 1:45 p.m.: Make-and-take beaded bracelets with Melissa Sprague-Mcann (Onę́yotga:ˀ/Oneida), in the Make-and-Take tent
- 1:30 – 2:15 p.m.: Chris Thomas (Onǫdagehónǫˀ/Onondaga) and the Smoke Dancers, in the performance area
- 2 – 3:15 p.m.: Make-and-take Cornhusk Dolls with Bernadette Scott (Onǫdawáˀga:ˀ/Seneca) in the Make-and-Take tent
- 2:30 – 3:15 p.m.: Onę́yotga:ˀ/Oneida storyteller Melissa Sprague-Mcann sharing traditional Hodinǫhsǫ́:nih stories in the performance area
- 3:30 – 4:15 p.m.: Chris Thomas (Onǫdagehónǫˀ/Onondaga) and the Smoke Dancers, in the performance area
- 3:30 – 4:45 p.m.: Make-and-take raised beadwork with Doose Shenandoah (Onǫdagehónǫˀ/Onondaga) in the Make-and-Take tent. For older children (ages 9+) and adults

Annual Cayuga/SHARE Farm Picnic
4061 Truesdale Road, Union Springs

The next day, on Sunday, June 7, the Schweinfurth will be closed as staff move to the Cayuga/SHARE Farm in Union Springs to assist with the farm’s annual picnic. The farm is located at 4061 Truesdale Road, Union Springs. Here is the schedule of events:
- 11 – 11:30 a.m.: Opening greetings
- 11:30 – noon: Open mike
- Starting at noon: Musical entertainment by Paleface – Mark Porter & Friends; Lydia Garrison; Corn Bred; Le Beaver Bleux; Spuds & Tagget; Miss Marty & SGB; Midnight Society; and an open mike jam
- 1 p.m.: Potluck lunch – bring a dish to pass

Sa:gwáyoˀ Gayogo̱hó:nǫˀ/Cayuga People, We Returned Panel Discussion
Carriage House Theater at Cayuga Museum
6 to 7 pm Wednesday, June 10
This program engages with the Gayogo̱hó:nǫˀ Reoccupation of their Homelands after the 1779 Sullivan-Clinton Invasion, the Treaty of Cayuga Ferry (1795), and Gayogo̱hó:nǫˀ Community Perspectives on the Treaty of 1795. Featuring talks and a discussion to follow with: Peter Whiteley - Curator of North American Ethnology and Curator-in-Charge of African and Pacific Ethnology; Professor at the Richard Gilder Graduate School, Kurt A. Jordan - Professor of Anthropology at Cornell University, Steve Henhawk - first-language Gayogo̱hó:nǫˀ (Cayuga) speaker, historian, and faithkeeper who grew up on the Six Nations Reservation in Canada. The panel discussion will open with the Ganǫ́hǫnyǫhk (also known as the Thanksgiving Address, or the Words that Come Before All Else), given by Hoya:neh Sam George (Gayogo̱hó:nǫˀ/Cayuga, Bear Clan).
