5-Day Workshop with Hanna Vogel
Monday – Friday, April 6 – 10, 2026, 9am-4pm
Explore the possibilities of basketry techniques for sculpture. Using variations on traditional wire basketry, twining, and coiling with soft materials, students will learn multiple weaving techniques to make everything from small baskets to large scale installations. Particular attention will be paid to pattern and line quality in 3D work. Ways to include found objects and methods for turning a wide variety of upcycled materials into woven sculptures will be covered, as well as how to incorporate sculptural basketry into your other art making practice(s). The first half of the workshop will focus on demos and time for students to make their own sample “library” to refer to in their future work. The second half will involve one-on-one check-ins and problem solving as students delve into individual projects using the techniques they’ve learned. At the end of the workshop, we’ll have a friendly group critique to provide feedback on completed and/or in-progress work and help create clarity for future projects. No fibers or basketry experience necessary.
