TinkerLab 2022 will offer young artists the space and time to create. Together with Michele, an experienced maker, artist, and pre-K teacher, we will explore and create with all sorts of materials including recyclables, or glue, or salad spinners! The young artists will use materials in imaginative and unconventional ways, experiencing the delight of discovering their own creative genius. The last day of camp will include an art show of work.
Masks are recommended, but our policy is subject to change.
About the Teacher:
Michele Ridgeway captures autobiographical moments as well as recurrent themes of breaking away from either self or other imposed limits. Her early work was about the shields and walls and shells that we construct in order to protect the true self, or our identity, although ultimately it’s not protection but rather squashing…..Her father used to say “change is hard, but growth is beautiful,” and her work explores both the difficulties of life changes and the beauty of transformation. In this way, Ridgeway’s work is making way for connections and conversation with others, offering reassurance and a nurturing presence as well as celebration and self-love.
The fictional narratives, memories, or life moments that she depicts are rooted in a her own world and sized to her own home-like aesthetic. Ridgeway’s medium often includes food items such as frosting and gingerbread. She uses stop-motion animation, performance art, and video to create and present her stories.
