Schweinfurth Art Center Adult Classes Registration Policies

Pre-registration is required for classes unless otherwise stated. Payment is due at the time of registration. No refunds will be given for cancellations within one week of class start date.

Supply lists will be provided for certain classes. Students should purchase and bring the supplies to the first day of class unless otherwise indicated. Supply lists will be posted on the Art Center website as soon as possible, or emailed to registered students.

Special Accommodation for Schweinfurth Art Center Classes & Workshops

Participants that require special accommodation are encouraged to request accommodation at the time of registration. At least 2 weeks notice is requested.

All classes take place at the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center, located at 205 Genesee St., Auburn, NY 13021.

Sculpture: Landscape Reliefs

In this new 6-week series with Janie Darovskikh, develop your drawing and sculpting skills while creating a landscape in low to mid-relief. Landscapes can encompass a variety of ideas, from the hills and valleys of a portrait, to the distant mountains of an alpine vista, a rolling seascape, or a dynamic abstract composition of juxtaposed shapes. Students will experiment with depth, edges, planes, shapes, textures and forms creating in clay in additive and subtractive ways.
Pieces will be modeled in clay, molded in plaster, and cast in durable hydrostone. All materials included in class fee.

When: Thursdays, April 6-May 18, 2017 (no class April 20), 6-8pm

Introduction to Sewing

Learn how to use a sewing machine!  In this six-week series, students will learn the basics of using a sewing machine and complete several projects which highlight the most common sewing techniques, such as a pillow case, apron, small purse, tote bag and a table runner.  

Tools, sewing machines and most fabrics are provided.

Pottery Wheel

Calling all wheel students!  During this 6-week series, John Smolenski will guide you through the basics of making a pot on the wheel, how to create more advanced pieces and teach students about glazes. All registered students have free access to our clay studio to work on projects and continue to practice skills during the class period. Class size limited to 8 students. Appropriate for students who are new to the wheel, those who are looking to brush up on their skills and those with limited experience. With more than 30 years teaching experience, John is able to adapt the class sessions to the interests and skill levels of participating students.
Class fee includes 25 lb. of clay, use of community tools and glazes. Firing fees are additional.

Watercolor: Illustrations & Cards

Strengthen your watercolor skills and learn how to create meaningful and unique cards using watercolor and mixed media. Transform your studies and mistakes into something beautiful, all the while learning different mounting, design and painting techniques. We will be working from life and your own photographs.  It’s a perfect class for beginners or those who want to learn new techniques and experiment with more illustrative ways with watercolor and mixed media! 

Watercolor paints for use in class will be provided and are included in class fee. Please see supply list for items recommended by the teacher for each student to bring.

Clay Open Studio

Inspired to work on your own project? For artists and students with pottery experience interested in working independently without instruction, our Clay Studio is available to use on a monthly and drop-in basis. Open to ages 15 and up. A short orientation is required prior to using the studio unless you have taken a clay class at the Art Center.
Open Studio Hours
Tuesdays: 9:30am-4pm
Wednesdays: 9:30am-3pm
Thursdays: 9:30am-8pm
Fridays:  9:30am-4pm 
Saturdays:  12:30pm-4pm

Note the studio will be closed during Spring Art Camp (April 17-21) and for a fiber retreat April 28-30. 
Use of Clay Studio is free for students enrolled in an ongoing class in the Clay Studio
Monthly fee:  $60 for members / $70 for non-members
Drop-in fee:  $10 for members / $15 for non-members
Monthly fees include use of glazes, community tools and tables in Clay Studio and room outside studio. Firing fees are additional. Firing fees are “$1/mug size” for a bisque firing and “$1/mug size” for glaze firing. $1 extra per 6 extra inches in height.  Drop-in students are charged for firing on a per piece basis ("$1/mug size" fees apply). 
Clay is available for purchase in a 50lb box or 25lb bag. Note that clay used in the Clay Studio must be purchased through the Art Center. This allows us to reclaim clay and to minimize problems in kiln firings.  Exceptions possible if approved by a Clay Studio teacher.

Introduction to Figure Drawing, with model

In this six week series, students will develop their sight and hand/eye coordination and learn techniques to build a solid drawing foundation and an understanding of the human form.  Open to students of all skill levels, from beginner to advanced.  Terrific opportunity for students to build their portfolio.  

Basic art supplies needed for this class will be provided with the generous support of NYSCA. Scholarships are available.

MakeRoom for Knitting

Come to the Schweinfurth and knit with friends!  Join our drop-in group which meet in our upstairs Barbara Feinstein Sewing Studio on Tuesdays, from 11am-2pm.

Introduction to Upholstery - Ottomans & Straight Back Chairs

Bring in that old ottoman or side chair and refurbish to new again! Work with an experienced upholsterer to learn basic upholstery skills. Students will learn how to strip, assess, frame and repair, building a foundation using webbing, springs and padding. Students will also learn to measure for accurate fabric needs and how to apply the fabric to the frame. During the 6-week course students should complete an ottoman and a small chair.
