Summer Art Camp 2010

Art Classes for Kids Ages 6 - 14

Each summer the Art Center offers 6 weeks of art classes for children ages 6 – 14.  Each class meets for one week, Monday – Friday from 9:30am – 12:30pm. Kids can sign up for just one to all six weeks of classes. Classes are taught by professional art educators and teaching artists.  Students will have a great time with hands-on arts activities designed to build their visual arts skills. 

All supplies provided.  Students just need to bring a snack for our morning break and a smock so they can get messy! 

Cost per class: $85 members /$95 non-members.    

Discount for 2+ classes: $75 members/$85 non-members.

Week 1

July 5 - 9 •  9:30am - 12:30pm

                 

Art Explorations

Ages 6 – 8 • Teacher: Christine Alexander

Each week kids ages 6 – 8 will make 3 – 5 different projects, exploring drawing, painting, paper arts, sculpture and more. Using traditional materials to found objects, students will explore and discover new ways to make masterpieces. Projects will vary from week to week.  Register for 1 to 6 weeks of Art Explorations and keep kids creative all summer!

Abstract Drawing

Ages 9 - 14 • Teacher: Justin Moshaty

Kids will explore the work of abstract artists such as Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky and Peter Max as they learn to draw with their eyes closed while listening to a description and other fun techniques.  Students will use markers, pencil & colored pencils to create their abstract masterpieces.

Drawing & Painting

Ages 9 - 14 • Teacher: Melissa Johnson

Join professional artist Melissa Johnson to explore the basic elements of design and drawing while expanding your visual art skills. Students will work with charcoal, pencil, pastel & paint as they learn about perspective, scale, composition and color.

Week 3

Make a Marionette

Ages 9 - 14 • Teacher: Cari Adams

Kids will create a 3D puppet, resembling a cartoon character of their choice, using a variety of mediums. Head will be constructed out of balloons and plaster, feet and hands will be made from model magic clay and the bodies will be produced by leftover fabric scraps. Fishing line will pull the hands and head up so the sculpture moves.

Hand Built Pottery - Closed

Ages 9 - 14 • Teacher: David Webster

Kids will get their hands dirty working with clay and plaster as they explore how to make press molds for clay and pressed tiles.  Students will also learn how to hand build pottery using slabs, coil and pinch techniques.  The students’ final fired pieces will be available for pick up August 9 – 13.

Landscape Painting

Ages 9 - 14 • Teacher: Christine Alexander

Gathering inspiration from various artists, students will explore landscape paintings from the Finger Lakes to the Hudson River Valley.  Students will learn about the basic structure of landscape painting, how to use and mix paint, and how to paint what they see in our natural world. 

Week 6

Printmaking & Papermaking

Ages 9 - 14 • Teacher: Richard Pardee

Invent, combine and create artwork & artist books using printmaking and paper arts. Kids will learn how to make their own paper and explore various printmaking techniques including linoleum block prints and rubbings, stencils and rubber stamps.

Pre-registration and payment is required for all art classes and workshops at the time indicated by class.  No refunds will be given for cancellations within one week of class start date.  

If the Art Center cancels a class you will be notified. Your enrollment fee may be credited towards another class or may be refunded in full. Enrollment in an Art Center class signifies that you give permission to the Art Center to use any photos taken of yourself or your artwork to promote the Art Center.
